Disable USB Autorun

Some worms and trojans spreads by creating autorun.inf on removable media drives. To prevent being infected with compromised USB Drives, instruction below was created to disable running of autorun files.

  1. Click the Start button, then Run and enter “gpedit.msc” without the quotes
  2. Go to Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System
  3. Scroll down to “Turn off Autoplay” and double click on it
  4. Click on the “Enabled” radio button, then for “Turn off Autoplay on” select “All drives”

This will now prevent any virus from auto executing itself through a USB drive.


Other option:

  1. Open Windows Explorer or press the Windows + “e” key.
  2. Right-click the drive of the USB Drive. Then select Properties. Drive Properties will appear.
  3. Select the AutoPlay tab.
  4. Choose Select an Action to Perform
  5. At the bottom of the selection, click Take no Action, then click Apply.
  6. Click OK to exit Drive Properties.
Note: To disable automatically running device, press and hold down one of the SHIFT key while device' inserted.
